Chapter Six

I didn’t get home until around dawn. Exhaustion weighed me down like a ton of bricks, but I convinced Mara to drive around and search for the building Sarah died in. We hadn’t had any luck even though we’d gone to all the abandoned buildings in Colchester that we could think of.

To my dismay, Sarah hadn’t appeared anymore either. I didn’t know if that was a good sign or not.

Mara said maybe now Sarah had remembered her death she would be able to move on and wouldn’t be stuck earthbound.

I wasn’t so convinced. I had so many questions I wanted to ask Sarah and wished she would appear just so I could make sure she was alright.

But no matter how many times I called for her she didn’t appear.

I collapsed onto my bed and fell asleep still dressed in my party clothes. It had to be early evening when I woke up again. Guess I’d been more exhausted than I thought.

“Sarah?” I called out for her, and half expected to find her hovering over me again.

Nothing. She still hadn’t appeared.

My heart sank. I had no idea what I’d do if she didn’t come back. I hadn’t wanted this in the beginning and now I had become so invested in the mystery of what happened to her.

After a shower and some food, I spent most of the evening doing more research online again.

I hadn’t checked my phone yet, but I picked it up. There were half a dozen missed calls from my mum asking if I’d seen my sister. Ugh, I couldn’t deal with her. I tried calling Stacey for like the millionth time, but she still didn’t answer.

So, after downing some coffee, I went back online.

I couldn’t find any answers about why Sarah hadn’t come back. Maybe she had moved on, but I hadn’t exactly proved who killed her yet, since I hadn’t seen everyone apart from Stacey and that redhead who dragged Sarah into that awful place.

Maybe the ritual I saw had been the key to solving this. Where had they been opening a portal to? Was it to summon a demon or to go somewhere?

Portal magic was way beyond my abilities, so I decided to call Irena, the high priestess of my coven. I didn’t quite know how I’d explain this, but I had to get some help.

I quickly gave her the story about how a ghost had come to me for help. And how I’d glimpsed how she died. I didn’t go into huge detail. For all I knew, she either wouldn’t believe me or would think I’d gone mad.

At seventy, Irena was an old school witch who wanted to keep her coven strictly doing white magic. Anything that deferred away from that was a big no-no. But she knew what went on in Colchester’s witch community better than anyone. “Everly, this sounds like dark magic. You should not be dabbling with this,” Irena said with her thick accent.

“I agree that the death was dark magic, but I believe the ghost came to me for help,” I said.
